About Sonny – Please read carefully before submitting an application !

Sonny is a 6 year old golden retriever.

He spent the first 5 years of his life in a 6ft x 6ft enclosure suffering physical abuse from his owner. This time sadly left him with lasting psychological damage. Luckily Vera was able to remove him from this awful situation and take him to the shelter in Bosnia.

This beautiful boy arrived in the UK last year and found himself in unsuccessful foster homes. He really struggled adjusting to living in a home.

In February another rescue stepped in and was eventually able to find Sonny a place in a rehabilitation programme. In September the amazing charity THE BIRKETT-SMITH ANIMAL SANCTUARY opened their doors to offer Sonny the chance of rehabilitation. The wonderful staff have helped Sonny make amazing progress. He can now be handled by multiple trainers and socialises well with other dogs. He has been harness and muzzle trained. Sonny is a food and resource guarder, these issues have been worked on as part of his training and he has learnt new behaviour.

Sonny has now completed his rehab and is looking for a foster or adoptive home so he can complete his training and learn to live in a home.

Sonny had aced his time at the centre so if you are looking for a dog who is already used to learning, being engaged in training and understands that success brings rewards and positivity then Sonny could be the dog for you!

Sonny has built bonds with multiple handlers, he socialises well with other dogs and loves spending time in the play area playing with his ball.

Sonny has been put through his paces and tested in lots of different areas such as with bikes, pushchairs, meeting people, interacting with other dogs.

Sonny has been fully muzzle trained and has learnt to meet new humans using reward training.

Sonny has learnt very quickly to trade toys for resources and now understands that he can have the space he needs which has taught him that he no longer needs to guard.

Sonny has been harness trained and he’s comfortable being handled and having his harness put on and taken off.
